1 Introduction
WizIcons is a set of icons for the great NewIcons Package by
Nicola Salmoria. As I didn't like the icons which are included with
that package (very well drawn by Roger McVey, but in my eyes not good
icons) I created my own. First they were made only for myself, but
now I think, why not offer them to the whole Amiga community.
My indention was to design icons, which allow to recognize (or at
least guess) the function of the assosiated program at first glance.
They should be as simple to be understood immediately, but on the
other hand they should also look great - at least this is an amiga!
2 Installing
There is no installing script (sorry). To install the icons you'll
have to use the program 'CopyNewIcon' which is included in the
NewIcons Package.
3 Legal stuff
· The WizIcons Package is FREEWARE. You may copy and spread it
as you like, as long as you do not alter anything.
· The WizIcons itself (i.e. the different icons) are PUBLIC
DOMAIN. Therefore you may change them, use them as a basis for other
icons or whatever you like.
· As long as they follow the rules and guidelines below, you may
refer to them as WizIcons.
3 Creating own WizIcons
There are some rules, which all icons which want to be WizIcons
MUST obey. If they don't, they are per definitionem no WizIcons.
These rules are:
(1) Size must be 52 × 32 pixels.
(2) The selected image must have the default background pattern.
(3) Light-source must be from the top-left corner.
Additionally there are some guide-lines, which should be followed
as long as you don't have a good reason not to do it. Think twice
before not following a guide-line!
(1) Find a good Metapher!
(2) Make your icons as simple as possible!
(3) Use only the NewIcons standard palette!
(4) Use the same object for the same thing in all icons!
(Take parts from existing icons!)
(5) Use different objects for different things!
(6) First sketch your icon without colors (only black on
background). The user should be able to recognize it even in
that stadium. Then use colors to improve the look of the icon!
(8) The selected state should mainly show that the icon is select
now. This is done by the blue background pattern. Add some
highlights or small animations, but make sure that the function
of the program can be recognized by the non selected state
only!
(9) Use the templates for projects, commodities and devs-icons.
In the 'Brushes' folder you find the brushes for all WizIcons of this
package. Use them! There is also a picture 'wizcionswork' that
contains templates and some objects you may need.
